Nursing Home Activities: Enhanced Senior Living
70While the significance of competent and well-trained senior living care specialists cannot be overstated, you may be surprised to learn that some assisted living professionals consider the activities of their residents to be equally important.
Nursing home activities can literally make the difference between living out later years in a quality fashion or wasting the hours away with boredom and depression.
With that in mind, consideration must be given to more than just the quality of medical care when researching nursing home or assisted living facility choices. It’s equally important to understand the atmosphere the facility provides, which should be designed to make residents feel at home and engaged in fun, worthwhile activities.
Without such an atmosphere, the mental well being of your loved one could compromise his or her health and ultimately, the will to live itself.
Important Nursing Home Activities
Here are a few considerations to observe when comparing nursing home choices and the activities they profess to offer:
- Most assisted living residents will face challenges associated with the physical effects of aging, so nursing home activities will need to be designed around that fact. In other words, ski trips or touch football games on the front lawn aren’t going to be on the menu.
- However, interaction with people young enough to engage in such pursuits is often highly therapeutic for older residents. Many assisted living patients don’t have the luxury of regular contact with their children or grandchildren. As such, volunteers from local community service, youth groups, or school clubs can provide contact with younger people that the elderly often yearn for.
- Speaking of interaction with youth, some innovative assisted living firms have arranged special sessions that allow residents to pass knowledge on to younger generations. Many individuals in the care of a senior living facility have skills or knowledge that have been long forgotten in today’s video game, cell phone and laptop world.
- For example, seniors can teach youngsters how to count back change, plant flowers, play card games like Euchre or Pinochle, or simply tell stories of what it was like to grow up in an era without so many modern conveniences. Nursing home activities such as these provide for stimulating communication that benefits all involved.
- The location of the assisted living facility or nursing home will certainly make a difference in the type of activities that can be offered. Some examples of good activities at certain Texas assisted living facilities might make for poor ones in Alaska, depending on the season.
- And if the nursing home is located near attractions that may be of interest to residents, special events can be arranged that allow mobile (or movable) patients to enjoy some time away from the facility.
Not all nursing home activities have to be centered around checkers or arts and crafts. But they do have to be engaging and interactive if they are to serve their intended purpose, so it’s essential to consider what prospective facilities promise to deliver in this area.
After all, the way your loved one spends his or her time in the golden years of life is what makes assisted living worth living in the first place!
